- free는 ‘무료’ 혹은 ‘자유로운’이라는 뜻입니다. rein은 ┖고삐’이며, 그래서 ‘통솔력’이나 ‘권한’을 의미하기도 합니다. 그러므로 free rein은 ‘무료 고삐’가 아니라 ‘자유로운 권한’을 뜻하게 됩니다.

- 위의 예문은 파키스탄 내에서 벌어지는 대규모 폭력 시위에 관한 뉴스에서 발췌한 건데요, 시위대가 너무 과격해 경찰관 여섯 명이 사망하자 정부가 경찰에 발포 권한을 주었다는 의미에서 free rein이라는 표현이 사용되었습니다.
