- turn은 ‘돌다’이고, tail은 ‘꼬리’이다. 둘을 합하면 ‘꼬리를 돌리다’ 정도가 될 수 있겠습니다. 꼬리가 있는 쪽의 엉덩이를 돌리는 건 등을 보이는 것이고, 등을 보이는 건 도망갈 때 나타나는 현상이죠. 그래서 turn tail은 ‘도망가다’가 됩니다.

- 우리나라 말에도 ‘꽁무니를 빼다’라는 말이 있는데요, 그것과 비슷하다고 볼 수 있습니다.

- 위의 예문은 최근 다시 들고 일어난 시리아 반군에 관한 기사에서 발췌한 것인데요. 현 시리아 대통령인 아사드의 정규군이 반군의 진격 앞에 그저 도망가기만 했을 뿐이라는 의미에서 turn tail이 사용됐습니다.

(남자가 돌을 집어들고 던지려 하자 개는 꽁무니를 뺐다.)

* When they heard the sirens, they turned tail and ran.
(사이렌이 들리기 시작하자 그들은 곧바로 돌아서 도망갔다.)
* She wanted to turn tail, but she couldn┖t have stood herself if she appeared such a coward.
(그녀는 도망치고 싶었지만, 그랬을 때 겁장이로 보이는 것이 더 싫어서 그렇게 하지 않았다.)
